Is This Trip Right for You?

This is an adventurous and active trip. Though the overall pace is moderate, the distance between some of our tour sites requires long travel days and early morning wake ups. On many of our days, we journey to remote areas over rough and bumpy unpaved roads. Walking is done over uneven surfaces or up and down steep slopes for two to three hours during tours. It is recommended to wear sturdy footwear. Small boats and animal experiences require agility to embark and disembark. Electricity for our camps is provided by generator and may not be available 24 hours a day. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking or who have heart conditions. This is a Small Group program. For more information, click here.

DAY 1, Friday - Depart for Mongolia
Depart for Mongolia

DAY 2, Saturday - Arrive in Ulaanbaatar
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's spiritual and economic center. The city was founded as a monastic center for Buddhism in 1639, and it changed locations 28 times before settling in its present spot in 1778
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar

DAY 3, Sunday - Fly to Moron, Discover the Tsaatan Reindeer People & Enjoy Cultural Events
This morning, fly from Ulaanbaatar to Moron near the northern border with Russia. From here, drive to Lake Khovsgol, the largest freshwater lake by volume in the country. Remarkably, it holds 70% of Mongolia's fresh water. Here, stand amidst a magnificent tableau, a national park area of soaring peaks and pristine forest that is larger than Yellowstone. After a scenic drive, settle in to your simple camp accommodations. This afternoon, meet the Tsaatan known as Reindeer people, one of the last groups of nomadic reindeer herders in the world. Tonight, attend a Welcome Dinner and orientation meeting with your Tour Manager at a camp restaurant
Overnight: Lake Khovsgol
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4, Monday - Explore Khovsgol Province, Meet Yak Family
You're in one of the world's most remote areas, and just above the northern border over the Ulaan Taiga range, Siberia stretches into forever. A highlight of the day is your visit with a local Yak family in their ger, where you learn about their nomadic life. In the afternoon, perhaps join the optional boat trip to Lake Khovsgol one of the largest lakes in Mongolia, surrounded by the Khoridol Saridag and Bayan Mountain Ranges. Your boat tour will take you to the shore on the other side of the lake and the entire excursion will offer beautiful views and wonderful photography opportunities. Back at the camp, there'll be free time to recount your incredible day amidst this glorious wilderness. After dinner tonight, join your fellow travelers, for drinks at a lakeside campfire
Optional: Lake Khovsgol Boat Trip (PM)
Overnight: Lake Khovsgol
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5, Tuesday - Fly to Ulaanbaatar, Transfer to Mt. Khogno Khan
Fly back to Ulaanbaatar where you'll begin your journey by land over the Mongolian steppe, a wide-open space of nomadic horsemen and shepherds, clusters of gers, and endless wild plains. A box lunch will be provided en route to Mt Khogno Khan. Later, arrive at your lodge and have dinner at a camp restaurant
Overnight: Mt. Khogno Khan
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6, Wednesday - Explore Karakorum and Erdene Zuu Monastery
This morning journey towards the Erdene Zuu monastery area. Arrive in Karakorum, the 13th century capital of the Mongol Empire and visit the Karakorum museum. The exhibits include artifacts from the immediate area, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, plus prehistoric stone tools. You’ll also see pottery, coins, religious statues and stone inscriptions. After lunch at a camp, visit a local market. Continue with a visit to the Erdene Zuu monastery, built in 1585, the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. During communist rule, it was allowed to exist, only as a museum. Today is an active place of worship once again. Stop to see some temples, stupas and glittering gilded Buddhas. Time for some souvenir shopping before departing for camp for dinner
Overnight: Mt. Khogno Khan
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7, Thursday - Explore Ulaanbaatar
This morning, return back to Ulaanbatar and after lunch at a local restaurant set off on a city tour. What makes Ulaanbaatar so remarkable is its pre-settlement history. For its first 140 years, it operated as a mobile ger, or yurt, monastery. Its leaders were able to relocate the capital as the needs of its residents required. Stop to share a simple lunch with a nomadic family in their home, and learn about this unique culture that still relies on the horse for commerce and trade. This afternoon you will see Sukhbaatar Square in the heart of the city. Its centerpiece is the statue of Damdin Sukhbaatar astride his horse, the heroic leader that led the 1921 revolution against the Russians and founded the Mongolian People's Republic. Several important buildings line the square, including the Government Palace, the National Theater of Opera and Ballet, and the Culture Palace. You'll also see a statue of Mongolia's most noted figure, Genghis Khan, the 12th century founder of the great Mongol Empire. Visit the National History Museum. Here, view exhibits featuring Mongolia’s geography, flora and fauna. You will see an outstanding collection of costumes hats and jewelry, representing Mongolia’s ethnic groups. Tonight, dinner is at a local restaurant
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8, Friday - Fly to Gobi, Hike the Eagle Valley
Fly to the Gobi Desert today. Its landscape and legends truly are the stuff of dreams. This is where the double-humped Bactrian camel roams, and where many famed cities along the ancient Silk Road prospered. After landing in Dalanzadgad, head to South Gobi Natural History Museum. Afterwards, set out for Yolyn Am, also known as Eagle Valley, and experience its starkly beautiful setting up-close during a hike down into the deep and narrow gorge, habitat of the lammergeier, an old world vulture. You might also see wild goats and sheep high on the cliff walls. Continue to Khanbogd camp for lunch. Tonight, have dinner at Goviin Naran camp
Overnight: Gobi Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9, Saturday - Journey to "Singing Sand Dunes", Camel Ride and Dune Climb
Today take a breathtaking drive to the Khongoriin Els "Singing Sand Dunes." From the grass-green steppe, the golden dunes are a wonder to behold as they roll to the horizon. But they're even more of a wonder to listen to. Marco Polo was among the first travelers to tell of these desert sands that sing. Today, scientists believe that the dunes' curves and slopes form a gigantic musical instrument for the wind. During the visit to this spectacular site, board some Bactrian camels for a thrilling ride, and later tighten your hiking shoes for a dune climb. Afterward transfer to your lodge located right near these impressive dunes and enjoy the evening at leisure
Overnight: Khongor Sand Dunes
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10, Sunday - Khuushurr Cooking Lesson, Visit Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs
This afternoon after lunch learn about khuushuur fried dumplings during a cooking lesson. Later, visit a treasure trove among paleontologists: Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs. Here, in the 1920s, American naturalist Roy Chapman Andrews led expeditions that uncovered specimens of Velociraptors, Tyrannosaurids, and dinosaur egg fossils at the foot of these red bluffs. The Flaming Cliffs, which stand alone amidst this vast landscape, got their name from their red-orange hues, especially prominent at sunset. They are protected by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. Afterwards, continue to the camp for dinner
Overnight: Gobi Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11, Monday - Fly to Ulaanbaatar, Genghis Khan Complex, Gandantegchinlen Monastery
Fly back to Ulaanbaatar today and depart to Genghis Khan Complex. Visit the museum and see exhibits relating to the Bronze Age and Xiongnu archaeological cultures in Mongolia. Enjoy lunch inside the statue. Continue the tour with a visit to the fascinating Zanabazar Museum, a sky-blue gem of Russian architecture. Its holdings include paintings and sculptures by Zanabazar, considered the "Michelangelo of Asia". Afterwards, visit the revered Gandantegchinlen Monastery. This Tibetan-style monastery is home to more than 150 monks. Communist rule closed its doors through the 20th century, and it was lucky to have escaped the destruction that most other monasteries suffered. It reopened in 1990. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a festive Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant with demonstrations of throat-singing, the two-toned music locally known as "hoomii." You'll also enjoy some traditional "long song," in which each note is drawn out, and experience an authentic tribal shaman dance and contortion
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 12, Tuesday - Depart Mongolia
Transfer to the airport for your departure flight
Meals: Breakfast

We are still talking about our wonderful Gate 1 trip, the things we learned, the people we met, and the fun we had. The more I think about this trip, the more I understand how difficult it is to plan an itinerary that pleases all on the trip. I must say that there was something for everyone ... we have no complaints. Our guides were all wonderful, especially Usa, our tour manager. She was efficient, pleasant, knowledgeable, and friendly for TWO WEEKS, and that is hard to do! I will have more thoughts once we get back to Houston, but at this point, I think we made a great decision to go with Gate 1.

Terrific, as usual! We’re now in double digits with traveling with Gate 1! Shyam, our guide, was superb. He conveyed his love of country, gave a good explanation of each day’s activities, and made sure everyone in the group was satisfied. He’s a gem. Also, his helper, Rohan, was great, and the driver did a terrific job. We were very pleased with the hotel selections and the itinerary. We have 2 more tours scheduled with Gate 1 this year. Keep up the good work!

As usual, Gate 1 did not disappoint. Sri Lanka was fabulous... with an abundance of friendly people, fabulous landscape and micro climates. It was rich in history and spirituality (Budha and Hindu temples everywhere) make this island very interesting to discover. I would be interested in expanding my exploration into the Northern part of Sri Lanka sometime in the future. I need to find out where in the world I will travel to in 2020...

The trip was wonderful and far exceeded all expectations! Silvia, our tour coordinator, was outstanding. She was attentive to the smallest detail and very knowledgeable of the area. We never saw her without a smile. Accommodations were wonderful and the meals consistently excellent. While all of our guides were exceptional, our guide at Terre del Paine, Chris, was outstanding. He conveyed his love of Patagonia with his hikes and gave us an even deeper appreciation of the area. The staff and crew of the Stella created a once in a lifetime experience. Thank you Gate 1. Our trip to Patagonia with Discovery was awesome! Each and every day was wonderful, and exciting, while experiencing the most mind-blowing natural beauty of the world. Our tour guide Gabriel is the best guide I have ever had on Gate 1 or any other group tour. This was our first Gate 1 Tour. We normally travel independently. We had a fabulous time doing the “Gems of South East Asia." We loved the small group (there were only 14 of us) and everyone got along really well. Panya did an outstanding job as our main tour guide. He went out of his way to accommodate everyone’s wishes and was very friendly, knowledgeable, thoughtful and compassionate. We had two vegans + a vegetarian + a non-fish eater in our group and he made sure everyone’s needs were taken care of at each restaurant. All the local tour guides were awesome too. We hope to use Gate 1 again in the future.

Our trip was wonderful. The guides were terrific, the sites and experiences were outstanding and the pace of activities was perfect. The tour was extremely well organized and the details and directions throughout were very clear. We especially enjoyed engaging in hands on experiences with residents in some of the countries. In addition to being very informative about the places we were visiting and the life and history in each of the countries we visited, our guides were instrumental in making suggestions and helping us navigate our way around cities on our own leisure time.

We had a very nice holiday in Sri Lanka. This was our first trip with Gate 1 and we are 100% satisfied with the superior standard of hotels you chose for us. The itinerary was varied and interesting, changing between nature and culture. Our guide, Heshan, was excellent, very helpful and very knowledgeable about the history, flora and fauna. The coach was always clean and fresh flowers were put on our seats daily. The couch driver and the assistant were excellent, and worked well as a team to get us safely through the chaotic traffic in Sri Lanka cities. Overall, very memorable and positive experience. We will definitely use your company in the future and recommend you to our friends.

The trip was magnificent. Easily the most physically demanding trip I have ever taken (jungle treks) ... I am 72 years old and in good health but the porters made the gorilla trek possible! The Ugandan people seem naturally friendly and outgoing. I love them. Morris 1 and Morris 2 are exceptional guides and just great guys. I recommend this trip to anyone and everyone. All of my Gate 1 trips have been super. My wife and I have always been taken care of extremely well. We go with another couple ... A great time for us to get together and have a great time. I wasn't sure what to expect and honestly was a little nervous to go to that part of the world. But I was pleasantly mistaken! This trip to Jordan was wonderful and such an eye-opening experience. The country is beautiful, safe and full of history. Our tour guide was exceptional! He knew so much and was a lot of fun! I'm grateful that Gate 1 created this tour and did it completely in Jordan (instead of a combo with another country). It really gives the traveler time to fully enjoy and appreciate Jordan. Discover Myanmar, September 2018
Dummy Image

I have taken several Gate 1 trips and am one of your cheerleaders- and the Myanmar trip was one of my favorites. To begin with, Mojo was a fabulous tour leader. We all loved him. He was fun- has a great sense of humor- and patient. He was interested in getting to know each of us, was interested in our purchases and impressions. He always made sure that our meals were served perfectly ..... It was clear that people he worked with also enjoyed him- even the cattle remembered and responded to him! There were several of us who are older and have minor challenges with ambulation. Mojo bent over backwards to make experiences comfortable, to help us off and on buses and boats, and to discuss with us in great detail what was coming up, how long it would take to walk to a certain point, how best to dress, etc. When people decided not to do certain activities, he would chase after them to see if he could accommodate them in some way. He could not have been more dedicated to our comfort, safety, participation and enjoyment. I really loved all the craft work on this tour. We were given great demonstrations on how things were made, as people actually made the products in front of us. They were all gracious with our fascinated observation and generously allowed us to take pictures. Often it was Mojo himself giving the explanation- I think he can do all those crafts! I really enjoyed bringing home some lacquerware afterward. I loved every stop, but Bagan was so beautiful - the sunset was spectacular. .....I was so moved by the organization that was teaching young people to be chefs, and the cooking (and eating!) was fun and interesting- including bringing the apron and recipes home! Thank you again for a wonderful experience!

Coming to Namibia has been a dream come true, and experiencing the beauty of its landscapes, wildlife, people and culture is all more than I could ever expect. Much thanks to our wonderful guide, David and our driver, Mojari - she was so fantastic, given the challenging roads throughout our trip. We were all so well taken care of every minute along the way. I am grateful for the warm hospitality everywhere we went, the many opportunities to learn about Namibia's history, the tribesmen's way of life, marvel at the stunning sand dunes, watching the gorgeous African sunsets every day...can't wait to share this amazing country with everyone back home!

Simply wonderful. Nepal is bustling with activity, with smells, with life! Most enjoyable were the walkabouts through Bhaktapur, and Tharu village in Chitwan National Park which allowed us to chat with the locals and have a closeup look at the way they live. The dinner, home visits and the conversations about life in Nepal were priceless. Bhutan is more than amazing! It’s pristine environment and culturally rich history is fascinating. I loved the dress-up in traditional Bhutanese dres. The hike to Tiger’s Nest, is wonderfully rewarding ... At first sight, Tiger’s Nest was blanketed with clouds, but as the clouds lifted it was breathtaking and hastened our steps. Thanks to our guides Rajesh (Nepal), and Dawa (Bhutan) and our drivers who did a stellar job in ensuring everything went smoothly!

I have traveled on small group tours quite often, but this surpassed all expectations. Our guide in India was outstanding and the group I traveled with have all said they would travel again with her. I will certainly be booking through Gate 1 again.

Incredible doesn’t begin to describe it! From the moment we were met at the airport until the moment we left it just kept getting better. The accommodations were outstanding. The highlight though of course were the game drives. All of our drivers were so extremely knowledgeable which allowed us to track and see all of the Big 5. Don was our tour manager and he just made everything seem so effortless although I know there was a lot of coordination going on in the background. It won’t be our last visit to Africa or our last trip with Gate 1....thanks for the trip of a lifetime!
