Is This Trip Right for You?

This is an adventurous and active trip. Though the overall pace is moderate, the distance between some of our tour sites requires long travel days and early morning wake ups. On many of our days, we journey to remote areas over rough and bumpy unpaved roads. Walking is done over uneven surfaces or up and down steep slopes for two to three hours during tours. It is recommended to wear sturdy footwear. Small boats and animal experiences require agility to embark and disembark. Electricity for our camps is provided by generator and may not be available 24 hours a day. This tour is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking or who have heart conditions. This is a Small Group program. For more information, click here.

You're in one of the world's most remote areas, and just above the northern border over the Ulaan Taiga range, Siberia stretches into forever. A highlight of the day is your visit with a local Yak family in their ger, where you learn about their nomadic life. In the afternoon, perhaps join the optional boat trip to Lake Khovsgol one of the largest lakes in Mongolia, surrounded by the Khoridol Saridag and Bayan Mountain Ranges. Your boat tour will take you to the shore on the other side of the lake and the entire excursion will offer beautiful views and wonderful photography opportunities. The exhibits include artifacts from the immediate area, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, plus prehistoric stone tools. You’ll also see pottery, coins, religious statues and stone inscriptions. After lunch at a camp, visit a local market. Continue with a visit to the Erdene Zuu monastery, built in 1585, the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. During communist rule, it was allowed to exist, only as a museum. Today is an active place of worship once again. Stop to see some temples, stupas and glittering gilded Buddhas. Time for some souvenir shopping before departing for camp for dinner
Overnight: Mt. Khogno Khan
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7, Thursday - Explore Ulaanbaatar
This morning, return back to Ulaanbatar. En route, stop to share a simple lunch with a nomadic family in their home, and learn about this unique culture that still relies on the horse for commerce and trade. Upon return to Ulaanbaatar, embark on a city tour. What makes Ulaanbaatar so remarkable is its pre-settlement history. For its first 140 years, it operated as a mobile ger, or yurt, monastery. Its leaders were able to relocate the capital as the needs of its residents required. This afternoon you will see Sukhbaatar Square in the heart of the city. Its centerpiece is the statue of Damdin Sukhbaatar astride his horse, the heroic leader that led the 1921 revolution against the Russians and founded the Mongolian People's Republic. Several important buildings line the square, including the Government Palace, the National Theater of Opera and Ballet, and the Culture Palace. You'll also see a statue of Mongolia's most noted figure, Genghis Khan, the 12th century founder of the great Mongol Empire. Visit the National History Museum. Here, view exhibits featuring Mongolia’s geography, flora and fauna. You will see an outstanding collection of costumes hats and jewelry, representing Mongolia’s ethnic groups. Tonight, dinner is at a local restaurant
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 8, Friday - Fly to Gobi, Hike the Eagle Valley
Fly to the Gobi Desert today. Its landscape and legends truly are the stuff of dreams. This is where the double-humped Bactrian camel roams, and where many famed cities along the ancient Silk Road prospered. After landing in Dalanzadgad, head to South Gobi Natural History Museum. Afterwards, set out for Yolyn Am, also known as Eagle Valley, and experience its starkly beautiful setting up-close during a hike down into the deep and narrow gorge, habitat of the lammergeier, an old world vulture. You might also see wild goats and sheep high on the cliff walls. Continue to Khanbogd camp for lunch. Tonight, have dinner at Goviin Naran camp
Overnight: Gobi Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9, Saturday - Journey to "Singing Sand Dunes", Camel Ride and Dune Climb
Today take a breathtaking drive to the Khongoriin Els "Singing Sand Dunes." From the grass-green steppe, the golden dunes are a wonder to behold as they roll to the horizon. But they're even more of a wonder to listen to. Marco Polo was among the first travelers to tell of these desert sands that sing. Today, scientists believe that the dunes' curves and slopes form a gigantic musical instrument for the wind. During the visit to this spectacular site, board some Bactrian camels for a thrilling ride, and later tighten your hiking shoes for a dune climb. Afterward transfer to your lodge located right near these impressive dunes and enjoy the evening at leisure
Overnight: Khongor Sand Dunes
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 10, Sunday - Khuushurr Cooking Lesson, Visit Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs
This afternoon after lunch learn about khuushuur fried dumplings during a cooking lesson. Later, visit a treasure trove among paleontologists: Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs. Here, in the 1920s, American naturalist Roy Chapman Andrews led expeditions that uncovered specimens of Velociraptors, Tyrannosaurids, and dinosaur egg fossils at the foot of these red bluffs. The Flaming Cliffs, which stand alone amidst this vast landscape, got their name from their red-orange hues, especially prominent at sunset. They are protected by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. Afterwards, continue to the camp for dinner
Overnight: Gobi Desert
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 11, Monday - Fly to Ulaanbaatar, Genghis Khan Complex, Gandantegchinlen Monastery
Fly back to Ulaanbaatar today and depart to Genghis Khan Complex. Visit the museum and see exhibits relating to the Bronze Age and Xiongnu archaeological cultures in Mongolia. Enjoy lunch inside the statue. Continue the tour with a visit to the fascinating Zanabazar Museum, a sky-blue gem of Russian architecture. Its holdings include paintings and sculptures by Zanabazar, considered the "Michelangelo of Asia". Afterwards, visit the revered Gandantegchinlen Monastery. This Tibetan-style monastery is home to more than 150 monks. Communist rule closed its doors through the 20th century, and it was lucky to have escaped the destruction that most other monasteries suffered. It reopened in 1990. This evening, join your fellow travelers for a festive Farewell Dinner at a local restaurant with demonstrations of throat-singing, the two-toned music locally known as "hoomii." You'll also enjoy some traditional "long song," in which each note is drawn out, and experience an authentic tribal shaman dance and contortion
Overnight: Ulaanbaatar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our trip was great! The pace was active and we liked that. We covered a lot of territory in a relatively short time. We also loved that our group only had 15 people in it. Our guide, Jessica, was phenomenal. She was calm under pressure and took so much care to check in with all of us individually to make sure we were all happy and felt well.

It was wonderful! I've seldom enjoyed a trip more. Our tour manager Sam was superlative, so organized and on top of everything as well as helpful and friendly. Our local guides Ivy, Nora, Jack, Michelle and Tom were great, all very knowledgeable. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughter at their stories and anecdotes. We had no problems anywhere. Our tour mates were a great bunch of people, we bonded really well. China and Tibet are great places, so much history beauty and everything else too. The trip was well organized in its choices of the cities to visit and activities. Hotels were well chosen and the food was superlative. The home hosted lunches were definitely a highlight for me.It was a truly memorable experience to meet the local people in their home Well done Sam, well done Gate 1 ! Looking forward to the Egypt trip in October.

Our trip to China and Tibet was excellent. This was our first group tour and we were quite pleasantly surprised by the experience. Our tour manager, Sam, was exceptional! He was accommodating and personable from the very start and his professionalism showed every day with his communication skills and ability to manage every detail for all of us on the tour. We were impressed by the knowledge, communication, and friendliness of every one of our local guides as well. Good job all around Discovery Tours!

My wife and I had an awesome time on the 17 day China Tour Trip. We saw and learned so much about China and it easily surpassed our high expectations. This was our 3rd Gate 1 Trip and we have come to expect the care for detail and their ability to provide quality lodgings, meals and transportation. However, what made the trip so special for us was our luck in getting Melinda as our guide. She made the the wonderful trip remarkable. Her knowledge, her sense of humor, her organizational skills, her sensitivity to each individual's needs, her efforts to teach us everything -from basic Chinese language to the history of various periods of Chinese history and customs were wonderful and memorable. As you can see, I can't say enough good things about her. She is a treasure.

It was a fantastic trip. I cannot say enough about our experiences in China and Tibet. The cruise down the Yangtze river was also terrific. Our tour guide, Frank, and the local guides were knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. Looking forward to traveling with Gate 1 again.

My trip to China and Tibet was great. Our tour manager Ivy was exceptionally good and made this trip even more special. Her attention to details was amazing. This was the smallest group I have ever traveled with and I loved it as it allowed us to experience many things that wouldn't have been possible for a large group. Loved all the local guides as well. Loved the country, food and all the accommodations .. Would love to go back and experience more of this amazing country.

Without a doubt, the China/Tibet trip that I participated in was FANTASTIC! ... I am recommending them to family and friends. Having been on larger trips over the years, I must say that accommodating so few travelers afforded us greater mobility, and many chances to interact with each other ... Special, special thanks to Jenny and Frank for answering my neverending questions, offering so many local tidbits and gems, and enduring my versions of the languages. This trip was one that I wanted to experience for years, and it was everything that I expected and more ... Thanks again to everyone for my Chinese/Tibetan memories.

I would like to add that EVERYONE on our trip to China was over-the-top crazy about our tour manager, Louise. She could not have been more professional or more caring ... She never seemed to tire of our endless questions! ... Another guide was taking us to the airport for our trip home, but when Louise's flight was cancelled, she made a point to find us in a very busy airport. I can't say enough wonderful things about her. I consider her a friend and tears were shed when we had to say good-bye!
