The tour was excellent and very informative. The tour guide - Maureen - was excellent. We really liked the smaller group size (22) of the Discovery Tour. We would definitely consider doing other Discovery Tours. We may have been lucky in that we encountered virtually no rain over the 10 days of this tour, so Ireland really looked nice. We’re guessing that rainy days are more the norm. Overall we would definitely recommend this tour and Gate 1.Philip L. Oak Park, IL
We loved our trip! I would highly recommend it! Our guide, Linda, was the best. She was incredibly knowledgeable and caring. The itinerary was perfect and the Irish people warm and welcoming.Rosalie M. Jenkintown, PA
I liken it to an entry level course in college: exposure to the full breadth of all things Irish. We were treated to the history of the land, with particular attention to the independence struggle; the lives of people today; the current political circumstances; the education system; the terrain and how it influenced history; business and economics throughout a span of history; significant places that showcased the history and entertainments that reflected of Irish culture. The tour route and stops were well chosen for the purpose, but it would have been for naught without John, his knowledge and his ability to present it clearly, concisely and entertainingly. We appreciated the free time provided in different places to explore/shop on our own or rest over a pint. It would have been nice to have more time (e.g. in Dingle, et al.) where 2 hrs. was insufficient to both shop and have lunch. We will recommend this tour to others.Milton G Jr. Richfield, OH
It was wonderful. We would have liked an extra day in Adare I think is the only change. Our guide Maureen was the best. She was very knowledgeable and was a lovely person. She kept us on shedule without feeling like we were rushed. Patrick our driver, was very competent. We felt comfortable at all times. Patrick and Maureen were the epitome of what we expected of Irish hospitality. Because of them we will be back!Marnie F. Florence, TX
Great trip. I have nothing to say but good things! Well organized, varied, interesting sites, good hotels, fabulous food. Maureen is an excellent tour guide, very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful besides being endlessly patient. Mick the driver was professional, a very good driver and fun to deal with. Many thanks to the Fenton's and Damien Brennan for inviting us into their homes. The whole experience was enjoyable. Thank you very much.Beryl J. British Columbia, Canada
We have been on several Gate 1 trips and enjoyed them but this was our first Discovery Tour by Gate 1. My husband and I enjoyed it immensely. We liked the small number of fellow passengers...that's a real plus for us. Our guide Patrick was very knowledgeable and interesting. We had many laughs and learned so much about Ireland. We really loved it. The hotels were wonderful and all our meals that were provided were exceptional. We especially enjoyed the Dairy Farm luncheon and the Yeats Poetry luncheon. Our bus driver Kaspars was a very good driver and we felt very safe on the "wrong" side of the road for all of us. We will definitely book more Gate 1 Discovery trips.Carol P. Hastings, MN
It was wonderful. From the very beginning when we landed, Gate 1 was there to pick us up. All the hotels were excellent, so was the food. Our tour director Maureen was terrific along with Pat our driver. The welcome dinner complete with drinks was enjoyed and our excursions (lunch at a working farm, poetry lunch, boat ride, castle dinner, dinner with music and Irish storytelling) were most enjoyable as were our tour guides for various other places we visited. We lucked out with the weather . The only downside is the short time allowance for visiting certain historical places but the positive things we did much outweighed the one shortcoming of the trip. To sum up - a vacation of a lifetime!!!!!Arlene S. Southampton, PA
It was absolutely fabulous. Tour itself was perfect. On a scale of 1-10 (10 being best), tour guide Grainne O'Malley rated a 25+ - she was fabulous! She was incredibly knowledgeable and o-so-funny. Had us thoroughly entertained throughout - all the while taking great care to make sure we were happy. Likewise, our driver, Nick Forde, was wonderful! Small group size definitely added to the overall enjoyment. We will definitely be booking with Gate 1 Discovery again! Thanks for the memories!Therese, Oconomowoc, WI
We greatly enjoyed the trip, places we stayed, things we saw, and the guides provided were terrific, including of course Grainne from start to finish. She did an excellent job of explaining Irish life, especially the history behind conflict in the North which we all knew about, but, never got the historical ingredients put into perspective! Nearly all the trips we've been on have been smaller size groups of about 20, so we like that approach here - again, this group was very good together which helped make it work very well. Altogether, an excellent introduction to Discovery Tours! Thanks!Jerry, Bellevue, WA
Our trip to Ireland was awesome and we were very pleased with the first class attention we received from Discovery Gate 1. Everything was well thought out and all meals and accommodations were first class. Our wonderful guide Linda was so caring and knowledgeable, giving us a great deal of information about the sites we were seeing, which included names and dates. I can only praise the Discovery company and plan to suggest them to many folks we know that have shown interest in our trip. I know for sure that if we decide to travel to Europe again, we will turn first to Discovery Gate 1 and their small intimidate tours. A+ for this wonderful and informative vacation with a tour guide that seemed to enjoy the trip as much as we did.Barbara, Wellington, FL
Our guide Linda was fabulous, our driver Pat was helpful (not to mention a good driver plus funny!), and the Irish countryside was beautiful. Linda spent hours on the bus regaling us with Irish history and stories about the people and towns that we visited -- all without a script! Our local guide in Waterford made history come alive! Having two home visits was a very pleasant and unique experience. We had poetry readings at one and heard stories about Irish farming at the other, both accompanied by a delicious home cooked lunch. Another thing we also did enjoy was a very short, but delightful, cruise on the River Shannon. Very relaxing, complete with tea, delicious scones, toe tapping music, and lovely views. All of the meals were very good and most of them were covered. The hotels were very nice. I have to mention that one of the best things was that we had an absolutely wonderful group of travelers. Having a small group of 17 is definitely the best way to go. I would recommend this tour to any of my friends, and will always have fond memories of our experience in Ireland.Judith, Cherry Valley, CA
The vacation in Ireland was exceptional. Tour guide Granya did an outstanding job. Likewise with bus driver Mick. You add two such outstandings together and the synergy results in an unforgettable trip. I was a little concerned about the meals being included because this sometimes results in substandard fare that misses the authenticity of the country you are visiting. Such was not the case here. The meals were excellent and well-represented the local cuisine. Desserts were exquisite with the resulting gain of a couple of pounds. We ate at farmhouses and homes and the savory menus were only exceeded by the unpretentious hospitality. The trip was true to its theme of Castles and Culture as we stayed in castles where we were treated as royalty. The other hotels were comfortable and exceeded our expectations. The group was also very compatible and this contributed greatly to our delight during the nine days. We believe that vacation is not only for R&R but also to learn about the more difficult history of the host country, especially since it was living history which we read much about years ago. Please express our sincerest appreciation to Granya and Mick. After nine days we grew like family and our memories are enriched because of their affirmation of Irish culture.Martin, Pittsburgh, PA
The trip was excellent! The tour guide Gronya was unbelievable with her knowledge of the long history of Ireland, making sure we had information of travel plans for the day before and day after and being mindful to answer any questions, and fill any needs that came up. The bus driver John, what can I say - always there to assist me getting on and off the very comfortable bus and always with such good humor and smiles. Our group of 18 from all parts of the USA all agreed this was the best tour they have ever been on and many were world travelers and had been on many tours before. It was a thrill to be sleeping in castles (especially Ashford) and not to have to worry about what to do each day as it was filled with many varied stops. We are going to pass on our recommendations to all our friends and families. Thank you!Alice, Boring, Oregon
The trip was very good. Our guide Linda was exceptional and probably the best guide we have had on our numerous Gate 1/Discovery trips. She was attentive, informative, friendly and had a good sense of humor. She really made the group come together. We were also impressed with our driver Pat who also contributed his knowledge and stories of Ireland. The visits to the private farm and to the home of Damien Brennan, the expert on the poet W.B. Yeats, were much appreciated and helped to break up the more traditional sightseeing.Anthony, Falls Church, VA
Wonderful!!! Almost perfect! We loved the itinerary and our guide Patrick was fantastic...a knowledgeable and consummate professional about whom we can't say enough!!! We were also impressed with Kaspers our driver. Friends and family were very impressed with the pictures and descriptions that I shared almost daily on Facebook and I had several requests for information about our tour. I was happy to share info about the Irish Culture Discovery tour. I assume you will be asking for a more detailed evaluation at a later date. It will be a pleasure to provide one for you!!Elizabeth P. Crozet, VA
